Medical Gas Pipeline System Cost in India. 2026 Guide.

If you are setting up a new hospital, nursing home, or ICU in India, one of the first questions you will ask is: "How much will the medical gas pipeline system cost?"

You will probably hear a different answer from every vendor, and that is normal. An MGPS is designed around your building, not picked from a catalogue. A 20-bed nursing home in Dwarka and a 200-bed hospital in Gurugram have very different needs, so their costs are very different too.

This guide explains what actually decides the cost of a medical gas pipeline system in India, so you can plan your budget, compare quotes fairly, and avoid costly surprises. If you want a figure for your own project, you can request a customised MGPS quote and we will prepare one after understanding your layout.

What Is a Medical Gas Pipeline System (MGPS)?

An MGPS is the network that delivers oxygen, medical air, vacuum, nitrous oxide and other gases directly to the points where patients need them: operation theatres, ICUs, emergency rooms, labour rooms and wards. It replaces the need to move heavy cylinders from bed to bed.

A complete system has three parts:

  • Source: the cylinder manifold, PSA oxygen plant, or liquid oxygen tank that supplies the gas
  • Distribution: pipelines, valves and control panels running through the building
  • Outlets and alarms: wall or pendant terminal units at the bedside, plus alarm panels that warn staff of low pressure or faults

Our team designs and installs complete systems under our Medical Gas Pipeline System service.

Why There Is No Fixed Price for MGPS

Two hospitals can both say "we need oxygen and vacuum in 30 beds" and still get very different quotes. The difference comes from the building, the design, and the quality of the work. Here are the factors that matter most.

1. Number of beds and outlet points:

This is the biggest factor. More beds mean more outlets, more pipe, and a larger source system. A typical ICU bed needs several outlets, while a general ward bed may need only one or two.

2. Which gases you need:

Oxygen and vacuum are standard. Medical air, nitrous oxide, and anaesthetic gas scavenging are usually added for operation theatres. Each extra gas adds its own pipeline, outlets and safety components.

3. Your gas source:

Your source depends on how much gas you use and where you are located. Options include cylinder manifolds, an on-site PSA oxygen plant, or a liquid oxygen tank. The WHO and UNICEF both publish guidance on choosing between these. UNICEF's Oxygen System Planning Tool is a useful starting point for estimating needs.

4. Building layout and pipe length:

A compact single-floor clinic needs far less piping than a multi-storey hospital with the plant room far from the ICU. Retrofitting an existing hospital in a crowded area of Delhi can also take more planning than a new building, because work has to be done without disturbing patients.

5. Material and equipment quality:

Medical-grade copper pipe, certified valves, tested outlets and reliable alarm panels cost more than cheap alternatives, and the difference matters. A pipeline that leaks or delivers the wrong pressure is a patient safety problem, not just a maintenance issue.

6. Standards and certifications:

Your system should be built to recognised standards. ISO 7396-1 is the international standard covering the design, installation, testing and commissioning of medical gas pipeline systems, including alarms and the "non-interchangeability" of gas connections. You can read the scope on the ANSI webstore. Systems built to these standards cost more than uncertified work, but they are the only ones you should trust in a hospital.

7. Testing and commissioning:

Proper testing before handover includes pressure tests, leak tests, gas purity checks, and cross-connection checks. Some low-priced quotes quietly leave this out. Always ask if it is included.

8. Future expansion:

If you plan to add floors, an ICU, or more OTs in a few years, it is much cheaper to design for that now than to rebuild later. Tell your vendor your growth plans upfront.

MGPS and NABH: Why It Matters for Your Hospital

If you are planning NABH accreditation, your medical gas system will be part of the review. NABH's Facility Management and Safety (FMS) chapter covers the hospital's utilities and safety systems, and the NABH Hospital Accreditation Standards, 6th Edition is worth sharing with your project team before design begins. Building the MGPS right the first time is far cheaper than fixing it before an assessment.

What a Good MGPS Quote Should Include

Before you compare prices, make sure each quote covers the same scope. A proper quote should list:

  • System design and drawings
  • Source equipment (manifold, plant or tank connection)
  • Pipeline, valves, and fittings
  • Bedside, pendant and OT outlets
  • Alarm panels
  • Testing and commissioning with documentation
  • Warranty terms
  • Annual maintenance options (see our AMC/CMC plans)

If one quote is much lower than the others, check what is missing before you celebrate.

Common Mistakes Hospital Owners Make

  1. Choosing only on price. The cheapest quote often skips testing, documentation or quality materials.
  2. Planning MGPS too late. The pipeline should be planned with the building design, ideally before walls and ceilings are finished.
  3. Hiring separate vendors for everything. When your OT, MGPS and furniture are done by different teams, coordination problems add delays and cost. Many hospitals prefer a single turnkey partner for their Modular Operation Theatre, MGPS, hospital furniture and nurse call system.
  4. Ignoring maintenance. A pipeline needs regular checks, and alarm panels and outlets wear over time.
  5. Forgetting backup supply. Always plan an emergency reserve so patients are never left without oxygen.

Setting Up an MGPS in Delhi, Delhi NCR and Across India

We work with hospitals, nursing homes and clinics across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and the wider NCR, and we also take on projects in Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Punjab and other parts of India. For hospitals in NCR, our Dwarka-based team can visit your site quickly for a survey. For projects elsewhere, we plan visits in advance and coordinate installation and commissioning on-site. You can see examples on our Projects page.

Common Questions

Article FAQs

1How much does a medical gas pipeline system cost in India?
There is no single price. Cost depends on bed count, number of outlets, gases required, gas source, building layout, material quality and testing requirements. The best way to get an accurate figure is a site assessment and a quote based on your drawings.
2Is MGPS cost calculated per bed?
Some vendors estimate per bed or per outlet as a rough guide, but the final cost still depends on pipe length, source equipment and the type of area (ICU, OT or ward).
3Is an MGPS better than using oxygen cylinders?
For most hospitals beyond a very small clinic, a pipeline is safer and more convenient because it removes the need to move and change cylinders at the bedside. Cylinders are still kept as backup.
4How long does MGPS installation take?
It depends on hospital size and whether it is a new building or a retrofit. Small projects can be completed much faster than multi-floor hospitals. Your vendor should give you a written timeline after the site survey.
5Do you provide MGPS installation in Delhi NCR?
Yes. We install and commission MGPS across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, and in other parts of India.
6Does MGPS need regular maintenance?
Yes. Alarms, valves, outlets and sources should be checked regularly. We offer AMC and CMC plans for this.
